Saturnino Herrán (1877 - 1918) He was the first Mexican artist to envision the concept of a totally Mexican art. And he laid the foundation for the development of the muralist movement. Although he had a number of critics in his time, his work has stood the test of time. Es uno de los grandes paisajistas del siglo XIX. Estudió en la famosa Academia de San Carlos bajo la dirección del profesor italiano Eugenio Landesio, experto en el arte del paisaje. Velasco fue su alumno más aventajado y pronto su obra comenzó a ganar prestigio dentro y fuera de México. Sus paisajes de la geografía nacional mexicana son uno de los grandes aportes culturales de este país para el mundo. Una de las siete muestras de la serie El Valle de México está en el Vaticano.
